When significant architectural asymmetry exists in occipito-atlanto-axial articulations, there usually appear to be developmental adaptations. For example, when one occipital condyle appears shorter, the atlas lateral mass and/or the axis superior articulating surface has been commonly observed to be larger on the ipsilateral side. This could be true particularly if an injury occurred at birth and the body adapted over time to improve the architectural balance. レントゲン写真からの研究では、関節面は一人一人、違う形をしているようです。また左右の関節面の形も違うようです。これは成長段階での補正作用ではないかと書かれています。又出産時に頚椎への圧力がありそこで関節がズレることがあるとしています。故に関節の形、位置からだけではズレの検出は難しいと言っています。
